Equipment for JEs

Alcyone is often asked for recommendations on eqipment for Jenquai Explorers. As styles of play can vary significantly from one player to the next even for the same character type, I have never been entirely comfortable in making recommendations to other players as to what gear should they be buying and using. However, presented here is the gear that currently works for me as a 150 Jenquai Explorer Grandmaster.

Even though my L8 projectile weapons don't inflict the damage done by my L9 beams, I still enjoy fighting Alcyone with projectile weapons. Alcyone employs projectile weapons for the sake of sport in a manner analogous to bow hunting for deer or fly fishing for steelheads. The pyrotechnic effects of projectile weapons are also much superior to beams and I've always liked fireworks...

Shields

L8 shield technician is the top shield ticket for JEs. Until recently I have been running the BlackSun Scale series shields which I appreciate for their characteristic high capacity and significant boost to my beam range provided by their beam range buff. A 200% L8 Platinum Scale shield provides a capacity of 40,283 units with a recharge rate of 331.4 units per second. It features an equipped 71% beam range boost buff. It also provides equipped +30 energy deflect and +30 impact deflect buffs. The BlackSun Scale shields are have no race or character restrictions.

 

I am currently evaluating and getting some stick time on the newer, L8 Mordana Veiled Oyoroi shield, which is useable by JEs only. A 200% Veiled Oyoroi provides a capacity of 43,029 units with a recharge rate of 441.5 units per seconds, about 6.8% higher capacity than the Platinum Scale and about 33.2% higher recharge rate. In addition to its significantly higher recharge rate, a 200% Veiled Oyoroi provides an equipped prospecting skill buff of 3.93 skill levels, an equipped reactor cap buff providing an additional 882 unitis of reactor capacity, and an equipped cloak buff providing a reduction in cloak engage time, makes the cloak harder to detect with See Cloaking, and increases the stealth strike time.

Alcyone ran the L6 BlackSun Dragonflight Gold engine for quite some time prior to upgrading her engine tech ticket to L8, maxed for a JE. The BlackSun Dragonflight Gold engine provides a base warp speed of 3500 and when combined with my L7 Charging Unicorn warp buff reactor and L9 Roadrunner Plus device cruises at the 5000 warp limit. The major attraction of the Dragonflight Gold engine is its equipped shield recharge buff, which increases the shield recharge rate by more than 40% at high quality levels. The the recharge rate of the BlackSun Scale series shields is made significantly more tractable when they are run in conjunction with the Dragonflight engines. The Dragonflight Gold engine has a rather high 4.9k signature, which can be a drawback in some combat and prospecting situations. When running the Dragonflight Gold engine without any sig reduction buffs, Alcyone's visibility is 5.4 and her unbuffered combat speed is 188.

 

However a desire to increase Alcyone's combat/camping speed finally motivated me to max out her engine tech ticket with those hard to come by post L150 skill points. I am currently evaluating and getting some stick time on several higher level engines including the L8 Deadly Breeze, the L8 Sundari Io C/8000 and the L7 Zeke's Solar Sail.

 

The signature on the Io C/8000 is given to be .8k and when the Io C/8000 is installed Alcyone's unbuffered visibility is 1.3k. The Io C/8000 also features an equipped hull damage reduction buff which increases your hull's ability to take damage by 150%.

 

The signature on the Zeke's Solar Sail is lower yet and when the Zeke's SS is installed Alcyone's unbuffered visibility is .5k. The Zeke's SS also features an equipped reactor recharge buff providing a +7.1 units per second reactor charge rate increase when the Zeke's SS is at 200% quality.

The Blood of the Dragon and Phoenix devices provide targeted reactor recharge capabilities. The Blood of the Dragon increases the reactor charge rate of the target, while the Phoenix provides an instant charge to the target. These devices are particularly useful for pumping up the reactors of other group members during combat. The Blood of the Dragon and the Phoenix also both provide equipped reactor recharge rate increases. The Monoceros provides a PSI shield buff in addition to an equipped reactor recharge rate increase.

The Ivory Ward provides equipped Chemical, Energy, EMP, Impact and Plasma shield buffs, all in a single device. The introduction of the Ivory Ward into the game obsoleted good number of other devices and greatly reduced the player knowledge and sophistication required to properly equip shield buffs when fighting particular mobs. In my humble but correct opinion introducing the Ivory Ward was a major faux pas on the part of the game "developers", but I won't get into that here... The Monoceros provides the equipped PSI shield buff and the Pavis provides the equipped Explosive shield buff that are lacking in the Ivory Ward.

 

The Chameleon Skin, Rhinoceros Horn, Turtle Shell and Corona Australis provide targeted shield buffs which are useful for additionally strengthening my own and group member's shields when fighting particular mobs. The Chameleon Skin provides a targeted Energy shield buff and also an equipped Chemical shield buff. The Rhinoceros Horn provides a targeted Impact shield buff and also an equipped Plasma shield buff. The Turtle Shell provides a targeted Explosive shield buff and also an equipped Energy shield buff. The Corona Australis provides a targeted PSI shield buff and also an equipped Device Damage control buff.

I employ the Sculptor and Harpy's devices to further enhance Alcyone's master level prospect skill and the speed with which she collects ores. The L9 Sculptor provides a prospect effectiveness buff, a scan range buff and also an equipped reactor recharge buff that lower level Sculptor's lack. At the master prospect skill level, the principle benefits of the Sculptor's prospect effectiveness buff are reductions in the reactor energy and drill beam dwell required to mine high level ores. The Sculptor's scan range buff also provides a significant increase in the volume of space Alcyone scans. She can see asteroids out to approximately 18.5k without a scan range buff, and out to approximately 22.5k when a high quality L9 Sculptor is equipped. Because the scanned space is cylindrical with the Z dimension constant at 5k thick, the volume scanned is a squared function of the scan range (radius). This 22% increase in scan range provided by the Sculptor's scan range buff yields an approximately 48% increase in the volume of space scanned.

 

The Harpy's provides a tractor beam speed buff and an impulse speed (non-warp) buff. Because I tend to move to asteroids outside Alcyone's prospect range (2.5k) using warp rather than impulse, the primary benefit of the Harpy's is its tractor beam speed buff. Between the increase in drill beam speed provided by the Sculptor and the increase in tractor beam speed provided by the Harpy's, these devices work together to significantly increase Alcyone's mining speed and throughput. I haven't yet run systematic tests to quantify the net increase in mining productivity provided by the Sculptor and Harpy's, but seat of the pants feels about like double.
